Partyism and Peer Selection on WI Supreme Court
The polarization among Democrats and Republicans is far more divisive than one might anticipate.
In a study concerning college scholarship applicants with similarly situated merit, both Democrats and Republicans alike chose in-party candidates 80% of the time. Clearly demonstrating a tendency for members of a political party to choose the candidate who share their political beliefs.
When comparing political parties against race, what you find is that no bias exists among white and African American candidates. In this study. the bias was overwhelmingly at the party level.
So what this comes down to is merit mattered more when comparing similarly qualified candidates of a different race. It did not matter whether they were African American or white. On the other hand, when comparing similarly qualified candidates from opposing political parties, merit did not play a factor in determining candidacy.
These findings are not a welcome sign for WI Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson as she heads in to a special election come April 7, 2015.
