WI Chief Justice Referendum Does Not Spur Consensus
Wisconsin State Representative Kerkman wholly misguided in her assumption that proposed Chief Justice referendum would "spur(s) consensus".
Making untimely changes to Wisconsin's Constitution at the expense of a well respected public servant is divisive. The idea that threatening someone's livelihood and career “spurs consensus” is ridiculous. What the proposed amendment sets out to do is; first undo the 2009 election victory by Justice Abrahamson. The second effect of the proposed amendment is it forces Chief Justice Abrahamson to, in effect, win two elections in order to secure a position she was already elected to serve.
Hey Samantha, there is no consensus on the WI Supreme Court for a reason. it is an independent body by design. You knew that right? And furthermore, political parties are more divisive and polarizing than one might expect. So the idea that consensus will be greater after a 4 -3 party line vote is questionable.
The referendum attempts to undo the 2009 election and create a situation where Chief Justice Abrahamson must win two elections to retain her post. And even more burdensome, the current chief, who has been elected until 2019 must also win an impossible peer vote to retain her post.
