WI Representative Gary Hebl on Legislative abuse of Chief Justice

Wisconsin Representative Gary Hebl spoke plainly about the abuses of legislative power by the  Republican majority. He admonished members of the Judicial Committee who supported the Constitutional Amendment's effective date. In the same breath, Hebl took the time to show his admiration and respect for Chief Justice Abrahamson.

Representative Hebl's remarks at the January 15 Judicial Hearing begin at 1 hour 3 minutes.

"'When you have all the power you have responsibilities. You can do whatever you want to do. That's exactly what you are doing here. And with that power you have consequences."

What is going on with a decision like this is we have someone you don't like. You don't happen to agree with her decisions. So this is a way we're gonna get at her. That's what 's going on here."

"And as a result of this action you're gonna have some unintended consequences. This is what happens when you have bad facts, to make bad law. And that's  what's going on here. "

"...when you practiced law as long as we have, you realize over time that the decisions made in the legislature have a long term effect on the practice of law. And this decision that we make here is going to have a long term effect on the Supreme Court. "

"And Frankly, when you're dealing with someone with the stature of the current chief-And I'm not just spouting things off here,-When I come on weekends to the capital you see the car out there with the license plate "great state", you know who's in the building. And she's here almost all the time."

"When my son graduated from law school.....the commencement speaker was a Supreme Court Justice from the state of  Michigan. Her entire speech talked about the qualities of Shirley Abrahamson as someone to emulate. The person we are talking about, that you're attacking by this decision is a regrettable action  on your part. To say it's not politically motivated is hogwash. You know that-everyone here knows that."

"To take someone down because of this action when you have a perfect opportunity with this amendment, is a real shame. And the unintended consequences you put on us in this state is a regrettable action. As a result of this action you're gonna have unintended consequences. This is a regrettable decision if you vote in favor of it."
